. B A C K G R O U N D .

History: They say insanity breeds insanity. After witnessing his brilliant but abusive father kill one of his coworkers, Eden developed a healthy fear at a terribly young age that it was only a matter of time before his father killed him, his mother and younger sister. However, with this fear came a simultaneous fascination with the deaths his father caused, and Eden began following him to watch him as he killed, thrilled by the thought of wrapping himself up in another person's life for a few moments, in all those emotions and hopes and dreams and fears, and taking control of them with his own hands. When his father finally caught him spying, he beat Eden and promised to kill him. In the heat of his panic and horror, something in Eden snapped, and the shadows came to his rescue, piercing through his father's body. Eden clutched him as he watched him die, feeling the life leave him through the blood that covered them both, and the thrill of another person's terror and pain feeding into him was more powerful and exhilarating than he'd ever imagined. He was nineteen.

His dependence on sunlight for survival and his need for darkness to thrive in his natural born gift of shadow manipulation made him an anomaly among his people, and he struggled to balance the two. It wasn't until his final years at one of Ashmire's Youth Institutes that he succumbed to the overwhelming need to kill again. The victim was a classmate he knew to be part of a group that had hurt his younger friend Vergil DeLarcarat, whom he sometimes tutored. Once he began killing, like an addictive drug, he found it impossible to stop, and one by one, he picked off the remaining members of the group without Vergil's knowledge. However, his method of killing didn't come without a twisted sort of affection for his victims, and he picked up the habit of leaving a white rose lying in the hands of those he murdered as a token of such--the calling card that would later get him dubbed the White Rose Killer.

After graduating from the Youth Institute, he traveled to Arcadia to expand his studies at the Academy. Though encouraged to enter the Magics Academy of Shadow Magic, he chose instead the Scholars Academy of the Sciences with a concentration in anatomy. Fascinated by every detail of death, he finished the required number of years to gain a teaching permit of his own and took a job as a professor at the Academy division from which he graduated.

More recently, one evening he came across a couple of kids in an alley torturing a small gray cat with intent to kill it. After dealing with the brats (don't ask what happened to them), he planned to put the cat out of its misery at first, but then it nuzzled up to him and clung, and he decided instead to take it home with him. Patching him up and letting him heal, Eden named him Boots for his three white feet. When at home or while out in the city, Boots is often seen at Eden's heels or clinging to his shoulder, and he likes to snuggle up as close to Eden's face as possible when sleeping. This makes Eden growl now and then, but though he wouldn't admit it out loud, he doesn't really mind that much and would kill anyone who hurt Boots.

Currently he lives in a small apartment with Boots and has no contact with his mother and sister. As the White Rose Killer, he chooses his victims largely at random--anyone who catches his interest--and stalks them in the shadows for several weeks to learn about them and their lives before making the kill. He makes it a policy not to kill his students.

Personality: To his students and coworkers, Eden is an amiable gentleman. Even to strangers he is charming and courteous, a perfectionist in his manners. He rarely has any trouble seducing his way into getting whatever he needs. As the White Rose Killer, he kills not out of vengeance or for amusement or any righteous reason, but because to him death is a beautiful, sensual and intimate act. He always holds his victims and looks into their eyes as they bleed out, never feeling closer to anyone than he does when he feels them die. He does feel some remorse for what he does, but the guilt only enhances the rush, the tragedy of life and death and the control he commands of both making him feel alive. For many years he recognized his thirst for blood as a sickness and tried to fight the urge, but slowly over time he let his disease swallow him up and ceased his struggle against it.

Eden is also a devout follower of Arcanism. Though he has his own carefully thought-out interpretation of the Arcan doctrine that doesn't always adhere to the official views, he does attend church services every week and is a regular contributor to the White Faith.

Appearance: Tall, broad and muscular with long black hair usually swept up in a high ponytail (that still reaches a good way down his back), it's no wonder that so many of Eden's students drool over him, male and female alike. As a Zoran, he has no need for protective covering from the sun and often goes out in short sleeves and a low neckline that show off more skin than most people are used to seeing on a day-to-day basis. It doesn't bother him that some of his scars may be visible--reminders of his childhood left behind by his father. As the White Rose Killer, he dresses in a black cloak to blend in with the shadows. He carries a longsword with him at all times, which is his weapon of choice over firearms, though usually he kills his victims with blades forged from shadows, which are like an extension of himself and allow him to more intimately experience the person's death.
